Wearing black in the summer probably seems ludicrous to most, filling us with horror thinking about the sweaty commute and unairconditioned offices. In fact it’s black that is the best colour to stay cool in as it absorbs the heat from the sun as well as our bodies (a little bit of science for you!). For those that know me well, my wardrobe is 75% black so this news was music to my ears! As I live and work in London I thought i’d put together a post that would work for city dressing. The key for me is to stay away from heavy woven fabrics and stick to lightweight pieces that you can wear with strappy sandals or your favourite chunky heels. I’ve pulled out 9 black dresses that you can wear out and about in the day, at work and for dinner in the evening.
Smock dresses are perfect for the summer season. They’re floaty, girly and come in an array of cuts and prints. This dress from River Island is great for being out and about in the city. The v-neckline is feminine so you can wear your favourite pendant necklace and the mid-length sleeves mean that you can cover your arms so there’s no need for a light jacket in the evening. I’ve styled this dress with my favourite Chloe Susanna boots. All outfit details are at the bottom of this post.
Embroidery and off-the-shoulder pieces are bang on trend right now and this Free People dress ticks both boxes. The puffy sleeves and intricate detailing make this a fun and flirty dress for hot weekends. Style it with a pair of simple sliders and a choker necklace to complete the look.
Reiss is my go to brand for workwear and occasion dressing. This little black dress is easy-to-wear for those days when you can’t make a decision about what to wear. The sleek silhouette features a side tie detail that’ll accentuate the waist for a flattering finish. Style it with a pair of black court shoes for the workplace and add a touch of red lippy before you head out to dinner.
This sleek wrap style is an elegant dress for the office. The sleeveless cut will keep you cool during stuffy commutes and the knee length hem line will ensure you look effortlessly chic throughout meetings.

Crafted from breathable cotton jersey, this mid-length dress features a pretty flared skirt. A round neckline adds a touch of femininity and the elongated sleeves will cover arms at after work drinks so you won’t need to carry a jacket round with you. Add a statement necklace and stacking rings to take the look to evening cocktails.
This super-flattering midi dress with it’s gorgeous lace panel detail is the perfect LBD for evening that strikes the balance between sleek and sultry. Tousle long length hair and add a pop of colour to the lip to finish off the look.
Yes, another Self Portrait dress, I just can’t get enough! The cutwork detailing of this black maxi dress is the focal point along with the cute ruffle details around the neck and sleeves. Accessories should be kept simple, with small stud earrings and plain pumps so not to detract from such a GORGEOUS dress.
If you fancy something a little more daring this Adelyn Skater Dress with its sheer panel is cool and comfortable for summer evenings. The sleeveless cut and the deep v neckline add a lovely feminine twist. Team it with strappy heels and gold accessories.
If you don’t wear black at this time of year I hope that this post has inspired you with a few options to consider.
